USA Women place 5th in first rugby Olympic Games
Team USA women finished fifth in the first Olympic rugby sevens competition after a strong performance against France in the fifth place match.
Team USA got off to another slow start, with France controlling the majority of the play in the first half. France opened the scoring late in the first half by way of a Camille Grassineau try, giving France a 5-0 lead going into the half.
Team USA remained resilient and began to ease their way back into the contest. USA star Alev Kelter scored straight off the opening kick of the second half to tie and made her own conversion to give the states the lead. Kelter proved a force on kick offs, retaining possession for the states before some nice offloads set up Jessica Javelet down the left hand wing for a try in the corner to give the USA a 12-5 advantage.
The USA women continued to pile on the pressure in the second half and extended their advantage to seal the contest late on with a last minute try from Joanne Fa’avesi to seal USA’s fifth place Olympic finish, 19-5.
