USA Sevens HSBC Adopt A Country Program Continues to Engage Students

17 Schools Participating in This Unique Learning Experience

(Las Vegas, February 6th, 2018) United World Sports, the owners and operators USA Sevens Rugby, today announced its continuation of the annual USA Sevens HSBC Adopt A Country Program partnership with the Clark County School District (CCSD).  For the eighth consecutive year, students participate in activities designed around curriculum inspired by the international cultures of the nations participating in the USA Sevens International Rugby Tournament.

For the third year, USA Sevens Rugby has partnered with HSBC to enhance the opportunities for the students and educators.  Seventeen CCSD schools who serve about 12,000 students are participating in the program this year.  Each school has adopted one of the countries competing in the USA Sevens Rugby Tournament March 2-4, 2018.  Educators integrate hands-on lessons incorporating rugby, education, values and ambassadorship.  The Program includes curriculum modules in a variety of academic disciplines.

“This program continues to see rugby grow not just as a sport, but as a multicultural lifestyle.  We are proud to partner with CCSD to again bring the Adopt A Country program to so many students,” said Rob Cornelius, United World Sports vice president of business development.  “More importantly, we are proud to see how the students are utilizing the substantive curriculum to gain appreciation for other cultures connecting the world to their home town.”

Throughout the school year, each of the participating schools fully delves into their adopted country through a series of lessons in reading, writing, math, art, music, wellness, and social studies.  In addition, the program sponsors various rugby clinics and tournaments offering students and teachers a first-hand opportunity to learn the rules and culture of the game.

In addition, the Adopt A Country program enhances learning through a series of creative activities and contests for the students.  The T-shirt design contest invites students to create a design that best captures the essence of the Adopt A Country program by connecting their school, their adopted nation, rugby and Las Vegas in a drawing.  Four winners will see their creations come to life on T-shirts created and distributed to their school.  The essay contest challenging students to relate to their adopted country on a personal level by asking them to compare and contrast their typical day with that of someone their age living in the adopted country.  Each school’s essay winner leads their adopted team down the red carpet during the 2018 USA Sevens Parade of Nations Ceremony on the Fremont Street Experience, which will be held Thursday, March 1 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

During Rugby Week, the students will be visited by their adopted country’s team for a special pep rally and celebration, complete with a meet-and-greet with the team, autograph signings, rugby drills and more. On Saturday, March 3, students from the participating schools will have the opportunity to travel to Sam Boyd Stadium and cheer on Team USA and their adopted country’s team.
