USA defeated by Argentina in first Olympic match
The United States lost their opening Olympic match in a hard fought contest versus Argentina.
In an evenly poised first half, it was Argentina that broke the deadlock. The United States was put under pressure early and often from Argentina. Argentina pressed deep inside USA territory and after the ruck Axel Muller bashes his way across the try line to open the scoring which Argentina a 7-0 advantage going into the halftime break.
The United States began to ease their way back into the game in the second half. The States countered well after Argentina scored to take the lead 12-0. Argentina shortly after saw yellow twice in the second half. Leaving more space on the pitch, Zack Test found and opening and was brought down illegally just before the try line, awarding the United States a Penalty try. Madison Hughes stepped up to convert. The States hoped to seize the momentum and showed resilience as they worked their way deep into Argentina territory. The States finally found the lead after Danny Barrett smashes through Argentina defense for a try and Madison converts to give the states a 14-12 lead with seconds remaining.
As the clock hit zero, Argentina has possession at the end of the match. After some patient build up, Argentina quickly switched the ball out wide to Fernando Luna who gave Argentina the go-ahead score and victory, 17-14. The United States continues its Olympic campaign today versus Brazil at 5 p.m. est.
