In the second challenge trophy semifinal, Chile took on the 2016 & 2017 London Sevens Champion Scotland. The Chileans impressed with a draw against South Africa on Day 1 and then with a win over France to close Day 2. Chile drew first blood with a try by Benjamin De Vidts. Robbie Ferguson put Scotland on top with a converted try just before halftime. Then Scotland won a penalty on the ensuing restart, which ultimately led to Scotland’s second late try of first half to move in front by seven when Max McFarland dove over the line, sending the teams to their huddles.

For six minutes, neither side could find a gap to alter the scorline. Just when Chile looked like it might score, Scotland forced a turnover on its own try line and went 100 meters the opposite direction for a try under the post by Harvey Elms. There was enough time for the restart but not enough time for Chile to score twice, making the outcome known before the final kick. Chile’s final efforts to claim a consolation try failed to pay off. Scotland advances to face Spain for the Challenge Trophy later in the day. For Chile, it is the end of a fairly successful run at the 2019 USA Sevens.
