Although Samoa holds the 15–2 series lead, ,Russia last won when these two sides met in Sydney. Samoa enters as a team looking to establish a new base of success under new coach Sir Gordon Tietjens to try and recapture past glory. What seems like a lifetime ago, 2010, saw Samoa win the USA Sevens and the series.

Nerva Fomai of Samoa was the first to draw blood with a try in the left corner. The conversion made it 7–0. Russia responded with a try from Dmitry Sukhin and conversion by German Davydov. At the break, Samoa showed that it still had another try in it when Joe Perez scored in the corner. Tila Mealoi’s conversion struck the post, keeping it a five-point affair. After Russia squandered an attacking lineout with an unstraight throw, a cracking run by Alamanda Motuga set up a try for Laaloi Leilua. Joe Perez’s second try, Samoa’s fourth, broke Russia’s back. The Samoan fans let out a loud cheer when the hooter sounded, but even louder when Leilua added a fifty try and conversion to end the match. Samoa 31, Russia 7.
