In a battle between the only two nations to hoist a cup this season, New Zealand drew first blood with a try by Sione Molia, three minutes in. Two minutes later, Jerry Tuwai found a gap and tied the match. Vilimoni Botitu’s conversion gave Fiji the slight edge on the board. From the restart, New Zealand almost retook the lead but Tim Mikkelson failed to collect a pass while unmarked on the wing, giving Fiji a scrum at its own twenty-two. Neither side was able to change the scoreboard before halftime.

Tuwai’s second try of the match at the start of the second half pushed Fiji out to a full-score lead. The conversion by Botitu made it a two-score advantage for the Fijians. Tuwai wasn’t the lone man on the pitch with a brace of tries after Molia scored his second to bring the All Blacks Sevens back to within two points with over three minutes to go. With 2:19 showing on the board, Kurt Baker added a third New Zealand try to give the Kiwis the lead. Baker’s self-converted try made it 19–14 with a minute left. At the death, New Zealand managed to hold on.
