A minute into the match, Wales was called for an intentional knock on, which resulted in a yellow card for Wales. The disadvantage for Wales led to Fiji’s first points of the match, coming by way of Mesulame Kunavula. Wales’ Cai Devine drew the teams even with his try in corner. The improbable Welsh conversion gave Wales the even more improbable lead. Fiji did not trail for long, thanks to the speed and agility of Jerry Tuwai. Vilimoni Botitu’s conversion made it 12–7. Fiji extended its lead with a breakaway score by Waisea Nacuqu under the sticks.

In the second half, it was more Fijian greatness to extend the lead further with a try by Alasio Naduva to make it 26–7. Next up for Fiji was Paula Dranisinukula, whose try under the post made it 33–7. Wales continued to battle despite the insurmountable deficit. That led Cai Devine in for a converted try to make it 33–14 heading into the final minute of play. Wales’ Daf Smith almost added another Welsh try to close the match, but the ball was held up in goal by Aminiasi Tuimaba.
