The United States was eliminated from Olympic medal contention in a hard fought battle with Fiji.
Danny Barrett smashed his way through three tackles and found his way over the try line. Fiji responded with a try of their own shortly after the States opened the scoring. Fiji were able to counter quickly from a ruck deep in their territory to equalize as captain Osea Kolinisau found the try line. Fiji seized the momentum and took the lead a man down late in the first half. After a tightly contested first half, Fiji held a narrow 12-7 lead going into break.
The United States started the second half with focus and intensity. Perry Baker sliced his way through the heart of the Fijian defense for a try down the middle. Fiji quickly regained the lead after Semi Kunatani broke down the right hand side untouched for a try. Fiji extended their lead through Viliame Mata to give Fiji a two-possession cushion late in the second half.
The United States would fight until the end. New England Patriots’ own Nate Ebner found the try line to cut into the deficit with little time remaining. Fiji held on to win 24-19, eliminating the United States from Olympic medal contention.
