In a battle of the two nations who have combined for the last four HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series titles, Fiji pulled out to a 7–0 lead with a converted try by Josua Vakurunabili. Ryan Oosthuizen answered the call for the Blitzbokke in the fourth minute to close to within two points of Fiji after the Fijians were shown a yellow card. As the first half came to a close, the Fijian yellow card expired and South Africa picked up one of its own. With a seven-on-six advantage, Fiji’s Kalione Nasoko crossed in the right corner. Vilimoni Botitu’s second difficult conversion of the match set the halftime score at Fiji 14, South Africa 5.

Johannes Pretorius’s try at the midway point of the second half moved the Blitzbokke to within two of Fiji. A handful of errors kept both sides from making much headway for the next two minutes, but none stood out more painfully than South Africa’s knock-on from a ruck at the Fiji twenty-two meter line. South Africa still managed to get the ball back and threaten again inside the Fiji twenty-two, mere seconds later. But the error allowed Fiji to reset in defense.

With forty seconds to go, Fiji secured its own lineout throw. The throw, however, was ruled no-straight, giving South Africa an attacking scrum inside the Fijian twenty-two with seconds to go. Hammering away at the staunch defense, South Africa yielded a penalty at the Fiji five-meter line to concede the match, unable to get the one more score to advance in the tournament. Fiji will take on the winner of Australia v. England in the fifth-place final later in the day.
