In a match between a team that has thrice finished last this season and a team that is the two-time defending series champion and Olympic gold medalist, predictability held the day. There is a reason Fiji entered the match with a 13–0 career mark over Japan. Fiji jumped out to a 19–0 lead at the half and never looked back. By the full-time hooter, Fiji had trounced over Japan 41–0. The result was in line with the historical margin of victory (43–6) between these two teams. Despite a terrific showing at the Olympics and even a run to the plate final at the USA Sevens a year ago, Japan seems a long way away from returning to a world beater and may once more crash out winless.
