LVI Adds $20,000 Prize
By offering the biggest cash prize in America, the largest rugby tournament in the Western Hemisphere is now the richest.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Las Vegas Invitational has sweetened the pot for the champion of its men’s elite division, offering a $25,000 purse, with the champion taking home $20,000 and the runner up claiming $5,000.
The LVI, held in conjunction with the USA Sevens, one of 10 stops on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, boasts more than 270 teams annually across 20 divisions. The destination-tournament attracts teams from all over the globe, and the men’s elite division has long been one of the crown jewels of the event, with the standard of play rivaling that being played on the World Series.
“What better way to celebrate our 10 birthday than with the largest cash prize in American rugby,” said Steve Albrecht, tournament director. “We already attract some of the top invitational and touring teams in the world, but we wanted to raise the stakes to incentivize the best of the best. The carrot’s out there. Let’s see who goes after it.”
The LVI play out Feb. 28 – March 2 on the outskirts of Sam Boyd Stadium, with the final being taken inside for 30,000-plus fans to enjoy during a break in World Series action. The deadline to register for the LVI is Feb. 8, 2019, though the elite division will be exclusive. Teams interested in competing for the cash prize should register now.
