Caravelli Names Players Attending Dubai, George 7s Assembly

BOULDER, Colo. – USA Men’s National Sevens Coach Al Caravelli has announced the 22 players invited to the next sevens assembly, held November 15-23, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

This assembly’s purpose is to prepare for the first leg of the IRB Sevens World Series held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and George, South Africa and allow Caravelli the chance to cut the squad from 22 to 12 traveling players.

The team is coming off a high after beating Canada and being crowned champions of the NAWIRA Sevens Tournament, which served as the qualifier to the Sevens Rugby World Cup in Dubai 2009.

“We are pleased that the team performed well and attained the goals we set out before the tournament. But we all know that the Dubai and George events will be a big step up from our last outing.  With that said, we want to build on that success, continue to work on our one-on-one tackling and our team defense. On offense, we want to control the ball, as they say he who controls the ball controls the game,” Caravelli said.

The USA Men’s Sevens Team recently won a spot as a core team on the IRB Sevens World Series circuit, competing in all eight IRB Sevens World Series events - the first of which are in Dubai on November 28-29 and in George on December 5-6.

With several of the USA Sevens Team regulars touring Japan this week, Caravelli has chosen to invite five new players, not invited to recent, prior assemblies. Although, Caravelli will have the opportunity to pick up a few of the touring players after Japan, he is determined to recruit and train as many potential new sevens players as possible this season.

The new additions to the assembly include 20-year-old Zach Test, who played with the junior Eagles at this year’s IRB Junior World Cup. Zach was recruited to play wide receiver at the University of Oregon and is tall, fast and versatile, with the ability to play prop and wing. The other new recruit is San Francisco Golden Gate player Volney Rouse, who is a two time All-American and also looks to bring a lot of versatility to the team.

Three others are new to this season, but not to the USA sevens program and they include forwards Don Younger, Jarvis Albury and Matt Hawkins, plus halfback Andrew ‘Tui’ Osborne. Albury, Hawkins and Osborne all return after taking off a bit of time to recover from injuries.

“Don is back after four years and I’m thrilled to see him out again,” Caravelli said. “He is a very big man, who at 6’6” and 245 lbs., can play prop, but is also fast enough to play wing.  I know he has been working very hard to get ready for this camp”

The remaining 17 players all attended Caravelli’s last assembly. The forwards are led by Mark Bokhoven, Matt Byrd, James Gillenwater, Brad Keys, Rikus Pretorius, Dallas Robinson, Peter Sio and Blaine Scully. The backs are led Dallen “Paki” Stanford, and include Marco Barnard, Justin Boyd, Jone Naqica, Anwar Salaam, Shalom Suniula and Kevin Swiryn.

“If you look at the make up of this squad, they all have explosive power,” Caravelli added. “They push and challenge each other every step of the way. That is what it’s all about - Competition! The 12 that travel to Dubai will be the best we have in the USA”.

Looking forward to Dubai, the team will face Fiji, England and close out day one against European Champions, Portugal.
