Eagles Win NAWIRA 7s and World Cup Bid

October 26, 2008 – The USA men’s 7s team won the NAWIRA 7s Championships with two late tries to defeat Canada Sunday in Nassau, Bahamas and clinched their bid to IRB Sevens World Cup.

The Eagles had looked somewhat vulnerable during the day, giving up their first points of the tournament earlier against Trinidad & Tobago, and they fell behind to Canada in the final.

Smart play with the ball early on gave the Eagles some attacking opportunities. Anwar Salaam had a good scoring opportunity but was just caught. However midway through the first half Chris Wyles burst through the middle, took an offload and scored to make it 7-0.

From there Canada did a much better job keeping possession. They broke several tackles and really asked questions of the USA defense. Some iffy tackling allowed Neil Meechan to score to tie it 7-7. That’s how the first half ended.

The second half because with both Kevin Swiryn and Mark Bokhoven going for the kickoff. Predictably neither caught it cleanly and from the ensuing scrumdown Canada attacked aggressively. After some desperate USA defense speedster Sean Duke went in the corner to make it 7-12.

USA was patient and didn’t panic. They brought in fresh legs in the guise of Justin Boyd, and Boyd sparked some good attacking movements. He was a danger out wide, but with Dallen Stanford and Wyles probing the defense, Boyd made his biggest mark up the middle, taking a short pass and breaking through to score from long range. Nese Malifa’s conversion put his side up 14-12.

The referee said there was still more to play in the ten-minute half, so the Eagles pressured again, stealing the ball off the restart and hammering at the Canada line. Finally James Gillenwater looped around Stanford, who dropped an audacious pass around his back where Gillenwater took the pass off the deck and scored to seal the game. Todd Clever hit the conversion to confirm the victory 21-12.

The USA and Canada both go on to the 7s World Cup, but the USA will get a more favorable draw by virtue of being NAWIRA Champions.
