IRB SEVENS WORLD SERIES
Started in 1999, the IRB (International Rugby Board) Sevens World Series is an annual elite-level competition series between nations, whose top professional rugby players compete against each other throughout the year for the World Series Title. National Teams compete for the Sevens World Series Title by accumulating points based on their finishing position in each of the eight series tournaments.
Added to the series in 2004, the United States is a new addition to the international competition circuit. The IRB and the international community recognize the opportunity for success of the event through expansion into the United States. Initially, Los Angeles hosted the event where it ran for two years under the management of USA Rugby, the national governing body of rugby in the United States. In 2006, USA Sevens LLC purchased the event, moving it to San Diego while giving new structure, goals and vision for the event to grow to become one of the largest annual international sporting events in America.
